An unidentified man, who was reportedly strapped with a bomb, hijacked a plane traveling from Alexandria to Cairo. The aircraft was carrying 82 passengers, including 10 American citizens. Many believed the hijacker was affiliated with ISIS, but he actually took over the plane because he wanted to give a letter to his ex-wife in Cyprus. “It’s all to do with a woman,” Cyprus President Nikos Anastasiades said in a statement. “We are doing everything to release the hostages.” After the plane landed, the hijacker let most of the passengers go. His ex-wife came to the airport in an attempt to diffuse the situation. EgyptAir took to Twitter to keep people updated about the incident as it was unfolding. Before 8 a.m. on Monday, the last group of hostages was released and the hijacker was apprehended. Read more.
California Raises the Minimum Wage to $15 an Hour
On Monday, Governor Jerry Brown and other state leaders agreed on a deal to raise California’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2022. The plan was a landmark decision; the state became the first one to officially implement a strategy that will increase the minimum wage to that rate. California hopes other states will follow suit. “This plan raises the minimum wage in a careful and responsible way and provides some flexibility if economic and budgetary conditions change,” said Brown. The plan will increase the wages of 6.5 million people living in California and will benefit 43 percent of the state’s workforce. The deal is slated to be approved by the state assembly. Cities that have proposed plans to raise the minimum wage to $15 include New York and Seattle. Read more.
CVS Being Sued for ‘Shopping While Black’ Controversy
CVS is the latest retailer to be caught up in a “shopping while Black” controversy. Three ex-investigators have filed a lawsuit against the chain for racial profiling. According to detectives, they were told by one of the store’s market investigators to specifically target Black and Latino shoppers. The lawsuit claims that Sheldon Thomas told them, “When you catch the black people, lock them up,” and, “When you catch the Spanish people, lock them up.” He also allegedly said, “Watch the black n—-rs that come in the store,” and would not hold White shoplifters accountable for their actions. Racial slurs were also used frequently in the store. “Other large retailers faced with allegations of racial profiling have attempted to remedy these problems to help ensure that people are treated fairly without regard to race,” said their lawyer. “In contrast, we are not aware of any efforts by CVS since we filed the original complaint to remedy its problems.” Read more.
