Are Snapchat’s Filters Whitewashing Users?
We all love a good Snapchat filter, or so we thought…
The photo/video-based app is facing big backlash from those who believe its popular filters are actually whitewashing users. The flower crown and “beautifying” filters appear to lighten skin tones, brighten eyes, and slim the nose and chin.
Users have been voicing their thoughts on the “lightening” feature via social media:

Snapchat previously ran into controversy regarding race when they implemented a Bob Marley filter for 4/20, which many labeled as an indication of blackface.
The company has yet to respond to the criticism.
