For all HBCU alumni, ’tis the season to be jolly.

Homecoming is just around the corner and we can’t wait to ditch the corporate chains to return to our old stomping grounds.

Yes, we left our historically Black colleges and universities to take over the world, but at some point we all need to go home and pay homage.

Homecoming is a very special time of year that’s all about tailgating, seeing college bae, and enjoying performances by the G.O.A.Ts. The parties are some of the best you’ll attend all year—and did we mention all the free food?

Most importantly, Homecoming is about family. It’s more than something we do, it’s who we are, one of many lessons passed down generation after generation.

To say thank you to our HBCU aunties and uncles who’ve taught us how to come home properly and who still hold down the fort (and tailgate tents) year after year, we created a quick guide to keep them in the know. Be sure to send this list to them before the big event.

Here are some of the new terms they should master—or at least become familiar with. Happy Homecoming!

Don’t forget to share your homecoming memories with us using the hashtag #HBCULOVE and check out our interactive social wall brought to you by Geico here.

Another word for awesome, hot, cool. Example: Drake’s Summer Sixteen concert in L.A. was so lit.

Acting in a casual or disrespectful manner towards someone/dissing a friend. Example: Tasha threw shade at Mariah instead of being upfront about the issue.

Referring to good looks, fierceness, or something good. Example: Tasha made sure her hair was snatched to the gods before heading to Homecoming.

Used to acknowledge a goal or achievement you admire and want to accomplish yourself. Example: Beyoncé’s body is #Goals.

The guy/girl you’re totally into. Example: I saw my college bae and couldn’t help but smile.

This is an acronym that stands for “Greatest Of All Time.” Example: Kanye West is G.O.A.T.

When something is basically awesome or great. Example: Howard’s Homecoming is always dope.

Being aware and knowing what’s going on in the community. Example: Zendaya is one of the most woke artists of her generation.

To roast someone harshly. Example: Mariah was just about to drag the mess out of Tasha, when their mutual friend pulled her aside to mediate instead.
