Well ain’t this something to hear!
July 4th is being anticipated for a different reason this year. Instead of looking forward to the fireworks, and cookouts, EVERYONE is anticipating the drop of Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail. We were all introduced to the album through a commercial during the NBA Finals. The commercial featured the crem de la crem of producers, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Pharrell Williams, and Rick Rubin. The interesting thing is, is that one of these super producers did NOT work on the album; that producer being Rick Rubin.
After having worked with Jay Z on his previous albums, Rubin decided to sit out on this Jay Z project. Rubin spoke with XXL Magazine about the upcoming Jay Z album and his producer absence, saying:
“The point of me being in the commercials was that he was filming a documentary and he asked me—I imagine he’s just comfortable talking to me—to come listen to the songs with him and just talk about the songs. Just listen to it and talk about it, and that’s what we did. It was fun.”
So it seems as if Rick was in the commercial, and Magna Carta Holy Grail sessions mainly for support. Although he did not put in “work” on this album, he did however work on the latest album of Jay’s best man pal, Kanye West. Rubin did say that after putting finighing touches on Yeezus, going to Magna Carta Holy Grail sessions was a little difficult.
Although Jay and Rick did not work together on this album, hopefully they will on Jay’s next project. Let us not forget ’99 Problems’.
