What you won’t do is tweet a threat to the President of the United States, and get away with it.

Twitter has become one of thee largest social networks used, catering to millions of users worldwide.  Not only is it a networking tool, it is also a platform to release inner thoughts (in 140 characters or less of course).  With this being said, one would think that Twitter can be a place for freedom of speech, and to a certain extent it is, unless your comments are about the President of The United States of America.  You can pretty much “tweet” whatever you want when it comes to Twitter, you can even bash celebrities, but one thing is for sure, bashing the President will have Secret Services on your trail.

Three Twitter users found out what happens when you tweet a threat to President Barack Obama.  26 year old, Jarvis Britton of Alabama, was sentenced to a year in jail for threatening President Obama through Twitter. Britton tweeted, “Let’s Go Kill the President; I think we could get the president with cyanide! #MakeItSlow.”  Now this is not the first time that Britton has expressed wanting to cause harm to President Obama.  The first time that Britton made a threat to the President via Twitter, was just last year.  For that incident, he received a visit from the Secret Service, and was told to basically watch his tweets.  Why Britton would direct threats towards the President using Twitter again, I cannot begin to fathom.

Other Twitter users who were thrown behind bars are Dante Jamar Sims, and Daniel Temple.  Sims of Charlotte, N.C. was sentenced to six months after tweeting he wanted to “assassinate President Obama”.  Temple of Ohio s waiting to be sentenced for tweeting threats along the line of Sims’ threats.

To monitor Twitter threats like the ones of the individuals above, Secret Services created an account in 2011.  Twitter may be a way for you to express your thoughts and personal opinions, but making ill mannered tweets about President Barack Obama will NOT!
