Iman managed to fight back tears in an emotional segment filmed for Oprah Winfrey‘s, “Where Are They Now?” series.

Days before the death of her rock star husband, David Bowie, the supermodel shared her advice for how she was able to manage her modeling career and cosmetics line with being a wife and mother.

‘I think the secret to a lasting marriage is timing, first of all,’ she said. ‘You have to be at the right time in your life that you’re ready for an everlasting relationship, that it becomes first, and a priority in life.

If your career is important to you, don’t get married and have children, because something will give.’

While the pair may have been an internationally renown power couple, Iman revealed, “We both understand the difference between the person and the persona. When we are home, we are just Iman and David. We’re not anybody else.”

When asked what a typical day in the life of Iman looks like, the 60-year-old shared that she would go to her office, review new products, creative direct a photo shoot then “..by three o’clock I’m out of here…I become total wife.”

While many women feel pressured to get married in their 20s, she and David were wed at ages 36 and 45. Iman stressed the importance of trusting the timing of your life when it comes to relationships. “…Make your priority of what you want at that time. And sometimes you don’t even have to get married. Why do you have to get married?”

“I know as women we want to be able to have it all, but we can’t have it all at the same time.”
