Washington, D.C. has launched a pilot program to aid eligible low-income residents in reducing financial burdens from speed camera fines. Designed for SNAP recipients, the program offers a 50% reduction on qualifying tickets.

To be eligible, the fine must meet specific criteria. It applies to tickets under $100 for speeding less than 15 miles over the limit. Eligible tickets must be mailed on or after May 19th and tied to D.C.-registered vehicles. Notably, this reduction doesn’t extend to parking violations, red light infractions, or officer-issued tickets.

This initiative seeks to address the financial challenges faced by low-income families. For individuals reliant on SNAP benefits, a pricey $100 ticket could mean difficult trade-offs in managing daily expenses. Officials hope the program will not only ease these burdens but also encourage timely repayments and promote safer driving behaviors.

With only 3,000 slots available in this pilot initiative—determined through a lottery system—eligible drivers must act quickly. Notices will be mailed for qualifying tickets, but residents can also check their eligibility and enrollment status online.

This program marks a step forward in supporting D.C. residents who are navigating tight budgets, while also focusing on safety and community well-being. Check your eligibility today and seize the chance to reduce your fines!
