Metro Transit Police report a 22% rise in scooter thefts, with 28 incidents so far in 2024 compared to the same period last year. Officials published a video on social media this week, highlighting the increase and urging scooter owners to use U-locks to secure their scooters.

Skylar White, a Dupont Circle resident, shared that she now uses a U-lock after her previous scooter was stolen in D.C. “They’re not cheap, and they’re great modes of transportation,” White said. “To hear that they’re just going missing isn’t great. I hope that whoever’s taking them needs the money.”

In response to the surge in thefts, Metro Transit Police are conducting additional patrols to deter potential thieves.
