DMV Local News: U Street Youth Curfew Enforced This Summer

Youth Curfew Hits U Street This Summer
The streets of D.C. are getting a little quieter—or at least younger—this summer as a new curfew rolls out in the U Street Corridor. Starting this weekend, anyone under 18 will need to clear out by 8 p.m., as the city enforces its latest “Juvenile Curfew Zone.”
This curfew, which runs every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night until August 31, aims to curb youth violence and ensure public safety in one of D.C.’s most vibrant nightlife scenes. From 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., groups of nine or more teenagers won’t be allowed to gather in designated areas along U Street without adult supervision. After 11, the citywide summer curfew kicks in, requiring all minors to head home until 6 a.m.
The move follows a series of rowdy incidents across the metro area, including disruptions in locations like Navy Yard and the Wharf. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with city officials, enacted the Juvenile Emergency Curfew Amendment Act to address these ongoing safety concerns.
Parents, take note—violations could hit your wallet hard. If a minor is caught ignoring the curfew, their parents could face fines of up to $500. On top of that, community service orders involving up to 25 hours may also be issued to the young offenders.
While opinions on the curfew remain divided, officials say it’s a necessary step toward reducing risks for both residents and visitors. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, one thing is clear—the U Street after-hours crowd will look a lot different this summer.
Stay safe and stay informed, D.C.! After all, knowing the rules is how you keep the fun rolling in the nation’s capital.
