Perdue Agribusiness LLC has reached a $12 million settlement with the Maryland Department of the Environment, announced on Wednesday through a consent decree filed in Wicomico County Circuit Court. This agreement aims to resolve regulatory issues and avoid prolonged litigation.

Officials highlighted two main regulatory oversights by Perdue Agribusiness: failure to obtain necessary permits for its soybean oil extraction operations and operating new equipment without notifying the state after withdrawing a permit application in 2017.

Aneca Atkinson, Assistant Secretary of Environmental Justice at MDE, emphasized the importance of compliance with environmental laws, noting that Perdue’s actions contributed to poor air quality in Maryland. As part of the settlement, $4 million will fund environmental projects, reflecting Perdue’s commitment to remedying the situation.

In response, Perdue Spokesperson Kate Shaw acknowledged the company’s accountability for the oversight, attributing it to personnel changes and stating that corrective measures were initiated during an air permit renewal process in May 2020.

The collaborative approach between Perdue and MDE aims to mitigate environmental impacts and benefit the local community through enhanced environmental initiatives funded by the settlement.
